Intention vs. Tension:

Why Language Matters in Movement Teaching

A LIVE online workshop with recordings.

Challenging the validity of Voluntary Muscle Activation Cueing (VMAC) and other explicit, internally focused teaching approaches.

Encouraging the conscious engagement of specific muscles through cues like “engage your core,” “squeeze your glutes,” or “connect your lats” is a common practice in many movement teaching and exercise training settings. While it may seem logical for correcting technique, research and established motor learning theory reveal significant drawbacks. Voluntary Muscle Activation Cueing (VMAC) increases cognitive load, disrupts functional movement, and often hinders long-term skill retention.

Beyond challenging the validity of VMAC and related practices, this workshop goes on to explore evidence-based approaches which align with natural motor learning processes. These approaches  prioritising efficiency, adaptability, and skill retention, supporting  the development of meaningful movement skills which align with real-world functional demands.

Blending theory with a practical exploration of the points raised, you’ll move beyond the limitations of linear pedagogical practices embraced in movement and exercise teacher training programmes. misconceptions surrounding muscle function and movement skill acquisition.  while gaining a deeper appreciation of its role in functional movement, skill acquisition and optimal physical performance.

Not just for teachers! If you are invested in improving physical performance, join us, get informed & focus on what really helps you realise your physical potential.

It is time everyone had the knowledge and skills to scrutinise the validity and reliability of practices they are so often encouraged to pursue without question!

Participants simply need an interest in human movement. If you teach or engage in movement practice or exercise of any kind and ‘VMAC’ features within your training agenda, this workshop is a must for you!

Workshop Contents

What you'll cover:
    • Theory Meets Practice: An overview of the research behind motor learning principles, including attentional focus and the negative impact of VMAC on motor skill acquisition.
    • Experiential Learning: Interactive exercises where participants will experience the differences between explicit internal focused based instruction (including VMAC) and implicit external focus cues, fostering an embodied understanding of these concepts.
    • Practical Applications: Discussions and demonstrations of alternative cueing strategies that enhance client coordination, movement efficiency, and flow; essential qualities in the practice of Pilates.
    • Q&A: An opportunity for participants to share your own experiences, ask questions, and discuss how to integrate these strategies into your specific teaching practice.
    • Actionable strategies & a pathway for further development: Leave with tools and strategies to implement immediately into your teaching (if you teach), personal practice, daily tasks and physical performances (if you perform).

Why Attend this Workshop?

✅ Transform Your Teaching – Move beyond outdated cueing methods and discover strategies that genuinely improve movement learning and retention.
✅ Enhance Your Own Performance – Whether you teach or train, understanding motor learning principles helps you move more efficiently and perform at a higher level.
✅ Experience Different Perspectives – Engage in practical exercises that highlight the contrasting effects of internal vs. external cueing and implicit vs. explicit learning.
✅ Make an Evidence-Based Shift – Gain the confidence to challenge conventional wisdom and adopt methods backed by neuroscience, motor control theory, and real-world application.
✅ Applicable to All Movement Disciplines – Whether you practice Pilates, dance, sports, or rehabilitation, the principles explored are universally relevant.

If you’re invested in movement—whether as a teacher, coach, therapist, or practitioner—this workshop is a must!
